I really like what Jesse Thorn is doing with MaximumFun.org and PutThisOn.org and his other various and sundry endeavors.
I am not a fan of the name change from “The Sound of Young America” to “Bullseye”. While I agree that TSOYA was a mouthful and warranted review, I don’t think “Bullseye” is a very good name. Actually I think it’s a lazy, unimaginative, and diminishing name. Never the less, that’s what he’s chosen.
The content is still strong, so I’ll let it go from here.
If you, like me, love the content that came under the old TSOYA monicker, Jesse takes care of you and me. Go to maximumfun.org and look for the TSOYA torrent download. You can get the whole back catalog, 15G or so, for free.
I just uninstalled Google Chrome on my Mac. It made me too sad, and here’s why.
First, the vertical tabs option was removed. The change report says
Sidetabs were an experiment that didn’t pan out. They’re in a half-working state and should be removed, says Glen.
We’ll try to come up with other approaches for this use case.
This is patently absurd. It worked great. I used it for a long time. Everyone I showed it to, loved it, especially on a wide screen display. That they took it away so quietly irritates me.
Second, the session restore doesn’t work if you click the red X on the window. It does work if you Command-q or quit straight from the dock as stated here.
Network and cable shows are so pinched by commercials that they’re losing the art of the well crafted theme song. Over at Too Beautiful To Live they have a show dedicated to this very topic. I hadn’t though about it, but they’re on to something.
But there’s a new medium that doesn’t eschew the theme song to a clock: podcasts.
There are plenty of other examples. These are just the half dozen + one I could think of off of the top of my head. If you happen to listen into each one, you’ll want to subscribe. Seriously. Their content, except for TNT, is slightly to somewhat to very NSFW in no particular order.
What are your thoughts on the state of the theme song?
I spent a lot of time making sure that Facebook stayed a useful tool for me. I had ad-blockers. I had script blockers. I had cookie blockers.
I would log in two to four times a month and check the status. I would always log out when I was done. Yet I’d find, even though I had adjusted the privacy settings to a very paranoid level, that Facebook knew more about me than I was comfortable with.
I deleted my account. I removed the app from every phone and tablet that had it. I removed the integration with other apps.
I can only hope this kills it once and for all.
Yet I know that some integration may still exist. Some action I take may resuscitate my account against my wishes. I’ll have to track those errant bastards down and restart the deletion process.
This process is absurd. But I will prevail.
I never signed onto their groups. I never “liked” anything. I never used Facebook to log into another site. I never bought anything on it or considered the possibility. I disabled as much of the site as was possible.
Why?
Facebook is evil.
Here’s the dumb thing for Facebook – I was an early adaptor, I like tech, and I have disposable income. My friends were on it. My family joined in later. Facebook was how I kept in the loop with them.
Yet every move Facebook made alienated them from me more and more.
So I deleted my account. Yet, like some zombie movie I haven’t seen since I’m not that big a fan of them either, Facebook could rise up because I didn’t disable something lurking in some sub account.
Oh, and Facebook is evil.
I do not think about Facebook as an application platform or somewhere I’d like to play games. Zynga and it’s kind can take a flying leap as far as I care. I never bought or installed their crap and never will. I have too much self esteem and a respect for quality programming, neither of which are part of that company.
Why is Facebook evil? Their end user privacy policy is anemic. They openly partner with the very companies that they sell your information to. Facebook wants to keep your eyes glued to their property and their partners’ faux content as much as is possible.
Here’s my challenge. Install an adblocker to your web browser and visit facebook. If you have firefox as your browser, also install noscript. See what Facebook could be if it didn’t inundate you with crap. Once you reach that point its not hard to see another point where you can cast facebook aside.
Facebook does not exist for you. It exists for them. Drop off, drop out, and make your own site. Facebook isn’t the Internet and it never will be.
Facebook is evil. Delete your account today. You’ll be better for it.
I’ve been loving my two Google Android tablets. I have a rooted Nook Color and a Viewsonic G Tablet, both running Cyanogenmod7. I got them both for less than a baseline Apple iPad. They are far more flexible than the iPad, too.
I’m still working to integrate these wonderful tools into my day to day, but they are great additions to two things.
First, they are my print news source. I get RSS feeds from a variety of sources for news, tech news, editorials, and so on. Secondly they are fantastic media tools.
I’ll go into more of what these do and how I use them.
The take away is that you don’t need to buy into the Apple lock-down ecosystem to get a great tablet.
